Tequila

What is tequila? Tequila is a distilled alcoholic beverage made from the blue agave plant in Mexico. Its origins can be traced back to a 16th-century Aztec ruler, who supposedly ordered his soldiers to drink tequila before battle. Tequila has become one of the most popular drinks in the world, and is often associated with parties and celebrations. There are different types of tequila, including blanco, reposado, and añejo. The alcohol content of tequila ranges from 35% to 55%.

History: How did tequila come to be?
Tequila is a distilled alcoholic beverage made from the blue agave plant, primarily in the area surrounding the city of Tequila, 65 km (40 miles) northwest of Guadalajara, and in the highlands (Los Altos) of the western Mexican state of Jalisco. The drink's history dates back to at least the 16th century, when it was first mentioned in Spanish colonial documents.

According to one legend, tequila was discovered by a 16th-century Aztec prince named Quetzalcoatl, who brought the agave plant back from heaven. Another story claims that a peasant named Martin Sanchez first distilled tequila in Jalisco around 1530.

Whatever its true origin, tequila has been closely associated with Mexico and Mexican culture for centuries. Tequila is a popular ingredient in mixed drinks, with the margarita being the best-known example.

Production: How is tequila made?
Tequila is a type of mezcal, and both are made from the agave plant. Mezcal is made with any type of agave, while tequila must be made with blue agave.

The production of tequila begins by harvesting the agave plant. This is done by cutting off the piña, or heart, of the plant. The piñas can weigh anywhere from 80 to 200 pounds. Once harvested, the piñas are taken to the distillery where they will be cooked and crushed.

Cooking the piñas breaks down the agave’s cell walls and releases its juices. The juice is then collected and fermented with yeast to turn it into alcohol. After fermentation, the liquid is distilled to create tequila.

Types: What are the different types of tequila?
Tequila is made from the blue agave plant, which is native to Mexico. There are two main types of tequila: blanco and reposado.

Blanco, or white tequila, is the most common type of tequila. It is clear and has a neutral flavor. Reposado, or aged tequila, is amber in color and has a smoother flavor.

Añejo, or extra-aged tequila, is aged for at least one year in oak barrels. This type of tequila has a deep golden color and a rich flavor.

There are also flavoured types of tequila, such as strawberry, mango, and lime. These are made by adding flavours to the blanco variety of tequila.

Tasting: How do you properly taste tequila?
When it comes to tequila, there are two main ways to taste it - either straight up or with a mixer. If you're tasting it straight, then you should pour a small amount into a glass and sniff it first. You'll get a sense of the agave aromas, as well as any other scents that might be present. Take a sip and let it sit on your tongue for a moment before swallowing. You should be able to taste the sweetness of the agave, as well as any other flavors that might be present.

If you're mixing your tequila, then you can go with just about any mixer you like. Popular choices include lemon-lime soda, grapefruit juice, or even tomato juice. Just remember that the more sugary the mixer is, the less you'll be able to taste the tequila itself.

Food Pairings: What foods pair well with tequila?
When it comes to tequila, there are a few key things to keep in mind when choosing what food to pair it with. First, tequila is best paired with food that is not too heavy or greasy. This will allow the drinker to fully enjoy the flavor of the tequila without being weighed down by the food. Second, it is important to find a balance between the acidity of the tequila and the sweetness of the food. Too much of either can be overwhelming and make for a less than enjoyable experience. With these things in mind, here are a few ideas for food pairings that are sure to please any tequila lover:

Taco Night: Tacos are the perfect blend of light and flavorful, making them an ideal pairing for tequila. For an added touch of sweetness, top your tacos with a fresh mango salsa.
