Bowmore is the oldest distillery on Islay. It was founded in 1779 by John P. Simson and has been owned by the Morrison family since 1836. Â The distillery is the only one on Islay that produces both malt and grain whisky. Bowmore also has a visitor center and a museum that are open during the summer months. Bowmore's whisky is more complex than most because it is aged in two different kinds of casks. • The first maturation takes place in bourbon barrels. • The second maturation takes place in Spanish sherry casks.
