Strykk Not Gin
In the ever-growing world of options for those who don’t drink alcohol, a new player has arrived on the scene: Strykk Not Gin. This non-alcoholic spirit is distilled in the same way as gin, using botanicals such as juniper, coriander and orange peel. But what sets Strykk apart is its use of strychnine – a poison derived from the seed of the strychnine tree – which gives the drink a slightly bitter taste. The idea of Strykk was born through a conversation between two friends, one of whom is a former member of the Swedish Armed Forces. The friend told his former colleague that he had recently bought a bottle of gin and drank it by himself, but was dismayed to discover that it tasted quite disgusting without the addition of tonic water. Strykk is distilled in the same way as gin, but the process differs in that juniper berries, coriander and orange peel are not macerated together, but instead placed in separate bags to impart their flavours.
